80-Year-Old Pakistani Becomes PhD Degree Holder

Saeed Masood Usmani from the Department of Mass Communication was awarded a PhD by the Graduate Research Management Council of Federal Urdu University, Karachi, during its 66th meeting.  Under the guidance of Professor Dr. Tauseef Ahmed Khan, a renowned figure in academics, literature, and journalism, he conducted his dissertation study, which was entitled:

 “The Popularity of FM Radio Broadcasting in Karachi: An Audience Analysis”

The degree was awarded after receiving positive assessments from both national and international examiners, culminating in a successful public defense.

It is noteworthy that Dr. Usmani, who had four heart attacks and a stroke while pursuing his PhD, accomplished this academic milestone at the age of 80.  He was able to overcome these obstacles because of his unshakable commitment to education and his intense love of reading, which has earned him the nickname “walking encyclopedia.”

 In addition to his academic endeavors, Dr. Usmani has a history of political engagement and involvement in protest movements.

His dissertation investigates the social and cultural impact of FM radio in Karachi, the largest city in Pakistan. This research is notable for its inclusivity, gathering insights from over 5,000 respondents across all districts of Karachi: 2,500 men, 2,226 women, and 400 transgender individuals, making it a unique and comprehensive study in media research.

Key findings from the study include:

70% of participants believed FM radio enhanced political awareness.

86% credited FM radio with providing essential information on natural disasters, government messages, safety, and public service campaigns.

96% agreed that FM radio had shaped cultural and social attitudes.

90% reported listening to FM radio regularly.

80% felt it significantly contributed to language development.

90% stated that FM radio remained free from the influence of modern media.

Dr. Usmani’s accomplishment exemplifies lifelong learning, resilience, and the enduring impact of passion-driven research.
