HEC Wants Rs. 86 Billion for Universities in Upcoming Fiscal Year

The Higher Education Commission (HEC) has urged the federal government to allocate Rs86 billion for universities nationwide in the upcoming fiscal year, as stated by HEC Chairman Dr. Mukhtar Ahmed. He expressed hope that the government would approve this funding, acknowledging the significance of higher education.

During a discussion, Dr. Waseem Qazi, Vice Chancellor of Metropolitan University Karachi (MUK), raised concerns about MUK not receiving any grants. In reply, Dr. Ahmed assured him that financial assistance would be extended to the university.

Last year, rather than increasing the higher education budget, the government cut it to Rs25 billion, restricting funding to federal universities and ceasing grants for provincial institutions. However, after significant protests from provincial authorities, the budget was revised to Rs65 billion to also support provincial universities.
